Football Apprenticeships
SMS Coaching are opening their doors to aspiring young footballers in a bid to provide local youngsters the opportunity to gain a range of qualifications and work experience as part of a football Apprenticeship in Active Leisure and Learning:
This is an ideal opportunity for any young boy aged 16-18 who feels they have what it takes to meet the high demands of a footballer.
The programme will be football based and will also provide opportunities in community coaching and the day to day running of a local football club.
Whilst on the course the young players will be treated like full time professional footballers in which they will train and play fixtures as youth team players.
Using the high quality training facilities at SMS COACHING the Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership will be delivered in partnership with your local college , who will be the main deliverer.
In order for all the students to get the most out of the course they will be employed as apprentices by SMS COACHING and become actively involved in a variety of roles and the day to day working of the company and its community programmeS. During the apprenticeship programme SMS COACHING will provide the opportunity for learners to undertake tasks that are relevant to and support their studies.
The educational element of the programme is delivered 2-3 days per week and is open to 16-18 year old boys. The duration of the course is 38 weeks and the training will be based at SMS COACHING. The practical job role of the apprenticeship will be 8 hours per week in addition to the 2-3 days educational element.
All apprentices will receive the following qualifications:
1) NVQ Certificate in Activity Leadership (Level 2)
2) Child Welfare / Safeguarding
3) Emergency First Aid / Health & Safety
4) Functional Skills - Maths (Level 1)
5) Functional Skills – English (Level 1)
6) Fitness Instructing to Children (Level 2)
7) Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning (Level 2)
Students will be paid a minimum of £2.60 per hour covering 24-30 hours per week for 12 months whilst on the course!!!! Don’t miss out !!!
There are many progression options for the young people to take which depend on ability and performance. Their achievement will be constantly assessed throughout their NVQ program.
This is an excellent opportunity for the young people of the North West and the local community to get involved with SMS COACHING , achieve nationally recognised qualifications and commence on the ladder to a career in Sport & Leisure.
The course is totally free of charge and to apply students are required to attend a short work interview bringing along their National Insurance number, their full home address, date of birth and an emergency contact number. We will also need any student's previous qualifications but there is no minimum requirement for acceptance onto the course.

Initial Assessments
Initial Assesments are carried out with each Apprentice on an individual basis to ascertain his academic and footballing ability before the training programme commences.
An SMS trainer will deliver a presentation at this time to all new prospective Apprentices and Parents & Guardians.
Where possible, SMS trainers will undertake Initial Assessments in partnership with the following individuals:
- The Apprentices’ parents or guardians
- The Education & Welfare Officer/Academy Manager or Youth Development Officer of the Club
- A tutor from the designated Education Provider
The assessment, which will include a basic skills test, will normally be carried out between April and June and will enable the Apprentice to be placed on the most appropriate educational programme based on his expected GCSE results.
Recruitment Open Evening
SMS/ Ashton Town will host an apprenticeship open evening on Monday 23rd April 2012 @ Ashton Town AFC Ground.
This will be a football based open evening to assess players ability and also a presentation in the club house afterwards to provide details of the full programme.
This will take place from 6:30pm, 7pm KO and 9pm presentation in the club house.
